Eastern Columbia Lofts 849 S Broadway Los Angeles, CA 90014

Eastern Columbia Lofts

Clad in stunning turquoise terra cotta and gold leaf , the Eastern Columbia Outfitting Companies’ 13-story art deco retail tower epitomized the height of opulence when it established in 1930 . Currently , this zig zag moderne landmark enshrined on Los Angeles’ list of historic and cultural monuments dazzles anew – and provides buyers a timeless setting for urbane living .¨Spacious , sophisticated , urbane : each of Eastern Columbia’s 147 light-filled loft condominiums juxtapose luxurious contemporary upgrades and classic period details .
The same measures of elegance permeate the entry court and sky-high pool deck , leisure terrace and fitness studio . Directed by internationally acclaimed interior designer Kelly Wearstler Interior Design ( kwid ) and award-winning architectural firm Killefer Flammang Architects , the detailed redesign brings new polish to Eastern Columbia’s faceted beauty . Moments from Downtown L .A . hotspots like Staples Center , the Arts District and Disney Hall , Eastern Columbia towers over Downtown’s Historic Core . At the hem of the Fashion , Jewelry and South Park Districts , the Historic Core is the city’s authentic commercial downtown . Regaining their poise after decades of slumber , the neighborhood’s Victorian , Beaux Arts and Art Deco buildings are now home to intrepid residents , shops , restaurants and cultural magnets .

Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #294
“Eastern Columbia , Broadway at Ninth” – over several decades , the city’s airwaves chimed this jingle to advise Los Angeles shoppers of new arrivals and special offers at Downtown’s flagship department store . For years the tallest building on the area skyline , the Eastern Columbia Outfitting Company opened on September 12 , 1930 . ¨Perhaps Los Angeles’ finest example of the Art Deco era’s zig zag moderne style , the Claude Beelman-designed tower has long captivated arts and architecture scholars . Faced in turquoise terra cotta and trimmed with deep blue and gold terra cotta , the tower’s façade features sunburst patterns , geometric shapes , zigzags , chevrons and other stylized motifs . A four-sided clock tower emblazoned in neon with the name EASTERN caps its thirteen stories .
After retail operations ceased in 1957 , Eastern Columbia was transformed into studio and office space for local garment businesses and arts organizations . Among the tenants : the Los Angeles Conservancy and West Coast swimwear icon Jantzen . In fact , just up until residential conversions began , a fashion runway blazed through the building’s eleventh floor . From retail palace to creative workplace to timeless residence : it’s a fitting evolution for Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #294 .
¨The Historic Core¨Loosely outlined by 3rd Street on the north edge , 10th Street to the south , Hill to the west and Main to the east , the Historic Core was the cradle of early Los Angeles commerce and entertainment . A frequent backdrop for film sets , the area’s lofty Victorian , Beaux Arts and Art Deco buildings instantly telegraph urban history and culture. But it’s at the pedestrian level that the Historic Core truly reveals its deep roots – and its rising outlook . Along Broadway , retailers vend diverse wares at Grand Central Market and the Arcade building , and vintage movie palaces host concerts and dance clubs .
At 7th and Hill , five thousand precious gem and metal retailers make up the largest jewelry district outside of New York . On Spring Street , the former “Wall Street of the West” has come back to life as Gallery Row , a creative live-work haven . In the midst of it all , Biddy Mason Park features memorial art , shade , greenery and the whistles of city birds .¨Just a few blocks from the Historic Core’s fringes , more burgeoning districts and attractions beckon . It’s just a hop to South Park ( home to Staples Center and the Convention Center ) and the Civic Center ( Disney Hall and MOCA ) ; a skip to the Fashion and Wholesale Districts ( where Santee Alley and the Marts reign ) ; and a jump to Little Tokyo and the Arts District ( Japanese-American Museum , Sci-Arc ) .
¨THE KOR GROUP ¨An innovative presence in the real estate and travel communities , the Kor Group is redefining the concept of home with its distinctive hotel and residential properties .¨Every Kor development reinterprets the modern day environment , blending the comforts of home , business necessities and leisure amenities in unique settings . Starting with Beverly Hills’ Avalon Hotel in 1998 , Kor Hotel Group continues to craft a rare array of boutique hotels consistently singled out for praise in such influential publications as CondéNast Traveler and Travel + Leisure .¨That success extends to Kor’s residential projects . Respect for the historic character of landmark buildings and their local legacies guides Kor’s redevelopment approach ; insight into modern residents’ desires for a luxurious yet relaxed lifestyle underscores the design process . The result : personal spaces at sought-after addresses , rich in classic and vintage elements , up-to-the-moment conveniences and inspired interior design .
